To encourage the preservation and maintenance of windows in historic buildings and in zones of conservation, several grants are available in Ireland in 2024,.
Conservation zones (ACA) and protected structures in Ireland are buildings of great historical and cultural importance. It is deemed important to preserve this architectural heritage while simultaneously promoting sustainability.
Windows play a vital role in maintaining the character of buildings. They are not only functional design elements but also contribute to the visual appeal of the area. Preserving and restoring windows ensures the authenticity and historical value of the buildings.
Grants for Window Restoration and Replacement
These grants aim to provide financial assistance to homeowners and businesses for window restoration and replacement projects.

Built Heritage Investment Scheme

This is a grant scheme administered by the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage. It provides financial support for the conservation and preservation of heritage buildings, including windows. The scheme supports a wide range of works including repair, reinstatement and refurbishment of windows in conservation zones.

Local county councils will be launching this on their websites in the coming weeks with their own application forms and deadlines. Anyone interested should apply through their local council.
Below is a summary:
- It is mostly for protected structures, proposed protected structures or those in zones of ACA
- If the property is sold within 5 years of the grant being awarded the council may clawback the money and transfer to the new owner of the property.
- The process must be documented with before and after photographs, and photographs of the progress during the works
- Conservation professional must provide a method statement
- Works awarded a grant must have the work started by 13 September 2024 at the latest, and be completed within the calendar year.
- Applicants will find out if they have been successful by 1 March 2024
- Funding is from 2,500€ to 15,000€
- For routine maintenance or minor repairs, the maximum amount is 2,500€
- The government deadline for applications is 26 January 2024, although some councils may be earlier than this.
- Windows and doors are covered under the grant.
What is Covered?
Repairs to external joinery,
Works to prevent water ingress,
Repairs to significant elements of external joinery such as windows, doors and associated elements, with minimal replacement of decayed timber – appropriate selection and detailing of new sections,
Salvage and reuse of historic glass should be prioritised,
Draught proofing works to windows and doors in accordance with the Advice Series may qualify.
Not Covered:
The fitting of double glazed units, including slim profile double glazed units and vacuum sealed units into the existing or new sashes or casements,
The fitting of storm glazing,
The replacement of historic glass with energy efficient glass
2. Historic Structures Fund
The HSF is another grant scheme administered by the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage. it provides funding for the repair and conservation of historic buildings including windows. The scheme aims to ensure the long-term sustainability of Ireland’s built heritage and supports projects that enhance the architectural significance of the conservation zones.
