Timber windows and doors have been a staple of architecture for centuries, adorning historic buildings and modern homes alike. The enduring appeal for both historic and new timber windows, lies in their natural beauty, durability, and versatility, in addition to the availability of timber as a natural resource. As we look to the future, timber continues to be a popular choice for homeowners and builders, thanks to advancements in technology and sustainable practices.
Why Timber?
In a nutshell – style, performance and environmental responsibility! Timber windows and doors offer a timeless blend of aesthetics and functionality. Their natural warmth, customisation options, and versatility make them a popular choice for many architectural styles. Timber windows can be made to any shape or design, can be combined with any glazing and ironmongery and can be painted in any colour (which you can paint in years to come to a different colour if you so choose). Modern advancements and correct choices of timber, have further enhanced their performance, with energy-efficient designs, durability, and security features. Furthermore, as a renewable resource, responsibly sourced timber contributes to sustainable building practices. Lastly, you might not know that timber is low maintenance and skilled joiners can make any necessary repairs.
A Very Brief History of Timber Windows and Doors
Timber windows and doors have evolved significantly over time, adapting to changing styles, materials, and techniques as well as political and social influences over the centuries. In the past, timber was often the only viable option for window and door frames. The oldest surviving timber windows in Ireland date to 1680, which also coincided the beginning of glass making in Ireland. Before this time, political instability and social circumstances in the country meant that windows (as we know them today) were not a common element in buildings. People would have used animal skins to keep out the weather. Then as technology advanced and the fashions of the time, so too did the methods of timber window and door construction.
Georgian windows
William of Orange won the Battle of the Boyne in 1690 and so began an era of Ascendancy in Ireland. His reign was succeeded by that of the George I, II, III and IV during the years 1740 – 1830/7, during which Classical architecture was the prevailing fashion across Britain and Ireland. Alongside came the manufacture of crown glass and eventually cylinder glass in multi-paned sash windows. This was the ubiquitous style until glassmakers developed techniques for larger panes of glass.
The Industrial Revolution & Victorian windows
Queen Victoria ruled until 1901, during an era of expansive industrialisation. With the advent of mass production techniques and new materials like cast iron and steel windows of different styles became more prevalent. However, timber sash windows remained a popular choice for most, with a few changes in the introduction of bay windows, arched window heads and large single panes of polished plate glass and drawn glass.
Edwardian era and the Arts & Crafts
The timber windows of the early 20th century saw dramatic change, influenced by the dawn of electric light. Suddenly homeowners no longer needed, or could afford, huge expanses of glass and large houses run by servants. Houses moved to small dwellings with a rise of casement windows, and a move away from mass production into craftmanship such as leaded lights and stained glass
The 20th Century
The mid-20th century saw a decline in the popularity of timber windows and doors, as cheaper, mass-produced alternatives like PVC and aluminium became more common. However, a renewed interest in traditional building methods and materials led to a resurgence in timber’s popularity. Traditonal timber windows and doors are now a sought after feature in both period properties and elegant new homes.
The Benefits of Modern Timber Windows and Doors

Sustainability and Environment
Timber is the only sustainable building material on the planet – the more we use, the more we grow. Addtionally timber windows are repairable, and at the end of their life, recyclable. Although, at Timeless Sash Windows, we regualrly restore windows up to 300 years old, and they are still going strong for many years to come. This aligns with the circular economy to repair – recycle – re-use. It is also a credit to the craftspeople from many years ago, that worked without the benefit of electricity or modern tools. It is our duty to care for these as part of our built architectural heritage. Salvage yards sell old sashes that you can use for other projects, such as building cold frames or glasshouses, which gives a further lease of life to these products.
