15/08/2024French doors are a sought after feature in home design due to their elegant and timeless appeal. These versatile doors not only add a touch of sophistication to any space but also offer numerous practical benefits. Whether you are renovating or building a new home, French doors are an excellent choice that can elevate your interior design while adding value to your property.
History of French Doors
Why are they called “French doors”? Is France really the origin?
The origin of French doors dates back to the Renaissance in France. During the 17th century, fashion was evolving after the Gothic period. Initially, what we now call French doors, replaced the small openings to the outside to allow access to the balconies. The architectural fashion of the time placed a lot of importance on symmetry, proportions, geometry and regularity.
Additionally, as it was a long time before electricity, the issue of light was also very important.
Like many elements of Renaissance architecture, French patio doors spread first in Great Britain then in the United States, particularly in New York in bourgeois houses. In Ireland, design followed Great Britain particularly during the Georgian and Victorian periods.
“French doors are always used in apartments or houses so that natural light can circulate,” explains Joseph Kaelbel, an architect in Brooklyn. This name is also used for glass exterior doors or for doors leading to small balconies which are nicknamed ‘Romeo and Juliet balconies”.
What is a French door?
Any door that has two opening panels can actually be called French doors. As is the case with French windows, there is no fixed central mullion, so the opening is not obtruded.
They can open inwards or outwards depending on the most suitable space either side. In France, originally they opened inwards in order to facilitate cleaning.
Aesthetic Appeal
One of the primary reasons homeowners choose French doors is for their aesthetic appeal. With their classic design featuring multiple glass panels, they create an open and elegant atmosphere in any room. These doors effortlessly blend indoor and outdoor spaces, providing a seamless transition from your interior to your patio, garden, or balcony. Furthermore, whether you prefer a traditional or contemporary style, such doors can be customized to complement your home’s architectural design, making them a versatile choice for any property.
As bespoke timber manufacturers, Timeless Sash Windows can make French doors to match any aesthetic and glaze them with appropriate double glazing.
Maximising Natural Light
Another significant advantage of French doors is their ability to maximise natural light. The large glass panels allow sunlight to flood into your home, creating a bright and inviting atmosphere. Natural light not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of your space but also offers numerous health benefits, including improved mood and increased productivity.
By installing French doors in areas where natural light is limited, such as hallways internally, or rooms without windows, you can instantly transform these spaces into well-lit and visually appealing areas.
Energy Efficiency
French doors also contribute to improved energy efficiency in your home. Modern French doors feature advanced insulation technology, including draught sealing and insulated glazing such as double, acoustic laminate, barrier tested or other stylish choices. This combination helps to prevent heat transfer and minimises energy loss.
By reducing draughts and maintaining a stable indoor temperature, French doors can help lower your heating costs. Furthermore, the natural light provided by French doors can reduce the need for artificial lighting during the day, further reducing energy consumption.
