07/05/2024Different products require different raw materials and windows are no different. There is a plethora of options when you begin your research. Hardwood windows are, as they say, made from different types of hardwood.
The timber choice will reflect on the style and lifespan of the window, so it is important to choose wisely.
The Irish climate, with its unpredictable weather patterns, demands windows that can withstand harsh conditions. Hardwood windows, particularly those made from FSC-approved mahogany, offer exceptional resistance to moisture, rot, and warping, making them an ideal choice for Irish homes. Additionally, the timeless elegance of hardwood windows complements the rich architectural heritage found throughout Ireland.
As timber joinery specilaists for over 50 years, we have a wealth of experience in choosing the correct timber for the job. We typically use Utile Mahogany or Accoya for new windows. However, for the restoration of old windows, we often use Accoya for small splice repairs. This is an acteylated softwood which essentially gives the durability of a hardwood.
What is hardwood versus softwood?
Hardwoods mostly come from deciduous trees. These are trees that lose their leaves annually in Autumn. They typically grow slower than the evergreen softwoods. As a result, the timber is denser and hence repels more water. In the typically damp Irish climate, any external timber joinery really needs to be made from a hardwood.
In Georgian and Victorian times, however, the windows were typically made with softwoods. The wood was known as pitch pine or red deal and came from the Baltic States. Despite being a softwood, due to the colder climate, it was an extremely slow grown softwood and provides incredible longevity. Windows made from pitch pine can last 200 – 300 years and more , with good maintenance and care. Additionally at this time, oak was sometimes used. It was called Danzig oak as it came from the Prussian port of the same name (now known as the Polish port of Gdansk, but at the time was under German rule).
Modern softwoods are not comparable with this timber. The solution is to use Accoya wood. This is acetylated timber. It originates as Pinus Radiata, a fast growing softwood from New Zealand. Accsys transport to the timber to their factories in Arnhem in the Netherlands where they pass it through a process of acetylation. This dries the timber by converting hydroxyl groups to acetyl groups. The result of this process gives timber with dimensional stability, reduced movement and an anti-rot warranty of 50 years.
What are hardwoods?
Hardwoods are extremely dense timber. They come from trees such as walnut, iroko, alder, cherry, utile. The trees can take up to 150 years to reach maturity, whereas a softwood can be ready to harvest in 40 years. The timber is also usually darker, heavier and more challenging to work with than softwoods. It requires a higher level of craftmanship to acheive the same results. However, the difference at a molecular level, gives hardwood incredible durability.
As with all timber windows it is important, whatever they are made from, to ensure that the paint is well maintained and that the windows have an annual wipe clean to remove debris and insects.
How long do hardwood windows last?
Recent studies done at Herriott Watt university in Edinburgh show that modern hardwood windows will typically last at least 60 years. This is double the longevity expected with a uPVC window. Additonally, craftspeople can repair and repaint hardwood windows in different colours. Your maintenance schedule will also encourage increased longevity.
Is hardwood or softwood ok for windows?
Softwood is not suitable for windows in the Irish climate. In drier mainland European climates they would often use different softwoods. However, in Ireland we have quite damp weather conditions so a more durable wood choice is important. To use a softwood, we would recommend Accoya. It pairs well with the water based specialist excterior joinery paint that we use resulting in the need for less maintenance.
Hardwood is an excellent choice for windows. Occasionally, we use European oak if specified, or more commonly utile mahogany. Mahogany is a dense and durable hardwood that is highly sought after for its natural beauty and resistance to decay. By choosing FSC-approved mahogany, you can ensure that the wood has been sourced sustainably, promoting responsible forest management. This certification guarantees that the wood comes from well-managed forests, minimizing the environmental impact and supporting the livelihood of local communities.
Benefits of Hardwood Windows
1. Durability and Longevity: Hardwood windows are known for their exceptional durability. Hardwood, such as FSC-approved mahogany, is a dense and strong material that can withstand the test of time.
